Review of Boyhood (2014) by Peggy R — 17 Mar 2015
This movie is a one-trick pony hungry for a plot. The trick is the obvious -- filming over a 12-year period. But other than watching an under-utilized cast of characters grow older, it's hard to find a reason to see it.
The purported story line is so weak it's hard to state. This is basically about a young, directionless (surprise, surprise) boy grow into his later teen years, gaining some sense of what he wants to pursue in life.
His parents, even more directionless, supposedly gain a bit of insight into what they want to make of themselves. And it's all a big, directionless yawn. An Oscar nominee for best movie? That's no more than a tip of the hat for the patience shown by director and all key players to stick with a morass than many probably couldn't see coming, at leat not until it was too late.
There was even some alarming talk that it would win. Thank Goodness the Academy didn't totally embarass itself. It's a shame that the most of the cast and crew couldn't save themselves.
