Review of Boyhood (2014) by Tyler R — 08 May 2015
I know I'm going to catch a lot of hate for this, but I just couldn't seem to find anything special about Boyhood. The idea is simple: Follow a kid as he grows up. But the execution is very unique, which is following the same actor through his life.
I get what everyone went for, I just didn't get all wrapped up in it. To me, Ellar Coltrane was a much better kid actor in the beginning than he was as a teenager/adult towards the end. There never seemed to be any smooth transition from who he was as a kid to who he became.
The same for the mother, and especially the sister, who seemed to really get the short end of the stick on character development. The real standout, in my opinion, was Ethan Hawke. Watching his natural progression from wild and free dad who is still trying to be involved in the lives of his kids to a more settled down and almost world weary father was a nice transition.
Other than that, I give credit to those involved for sticking with the unique filming plan, but I didn't find much special with the film.
