Review of Boyhood (2014) by Edward O — 24 Jan 2017
It's a nifty concept but a total bore as a story. Why? Largely because it's pretty much the story of my own boyhood, except in real life my father was an even more extreme alcoholic deadbeat and my mother was even more supportive of my sister and I.
So why would I want to watch that all go down again in a movie. I guess to someone with a "normal" upbringing it could pass as a dramatic story but it's still hard for me to appreciate this film as anything more than an ordinary "day in the life" of a person, except again as the gimmick that it's "12 years in the life".
The only people I want to watch grow up is my real-life children. Now THAT is special.
