Review of Boy Wonder (2010) by Jeramie K — 07 Jul 2012
Boy Wonder tries desperately to break from the confines of your stereotypical action/drama vigilante justice genre, but falls short in many regards. Someone is done a severe injustice in their lives, usually at a young age... And thus, its this injustice that spurns their lives and actions for years to come.
No different here as Caleb Steinmeyer plays a disturbed young man hellbent on getting to the bottom of his mothers death, which he witnessed. No better way to do that then find a couple of random bums who got away with murder and putting them out of their misery.
Don't forget the glorifying of murder, and the misguided moral high ground that our main character takes. Or the two stereotypical cops. One who is ignorant and always behind and the other who is too smart for their own good, wants to get to the bottom of some cases and then winds up siding with our vigilante.
Yup, Boy Wonder covers all of the above stereotypes.
The casting and performances were fairly weak, bringing down what was a surprisingly well-written script with an even and consistent mood and tone throughout.
The twist at the at the very end was well done and it was achieved while keeping the theme or dark and seemingly insane.
It was a well-received and welcome ending after 90 minutes of cliches, stereotypes, and keeping with the status quo.
