As a gay man who packed his bags and left after my mother told me I was no longer welcome in her home, I kept wanting to yell at the kids in the conversion group "get up and get out of there. You don't need people who don't accept you the way you are.

" Of course, I realize not all people are as resolved as I was, but that is what I would tell them to do. Also, I guess I wasn't weighed down by the whole religious bit. When I was growing up I can remember thinking the stories we were told in Sunday school were a crock, so that was one less obstacle I had to deal with.

I'm surprised none of the victims of these conversion centers has gone "Columbine" yet .
