Review of Boy Erased (2018) by Devaughn B — 25 Nov 2018
Boy Erased is a powerful biopic based on Garrard Conley, written and directed by Joel Edgerton. It follows the son of Christian parents who is forced to take part in a gay conversion therapy. This is such a tough story to watch unfold, so proficiently told through Joel Edgerton's storytelling. If you haven't seen the 2015 psychological thriller The Gift, also written, produced, and directed by Edgerton, please get on it, and that was just his directorial debut!
Lucas Hedges is the lead here as Jared Eamons, and he is absolutely amazing in this role, as he always is. This really is his year, starring here, as well as in Ben Is Back, and Mid90s. The anger, frustration, fears, everything he channels within this story, it's stunning to watch his work. Both Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe are incredible in their roles as Jared's parents. It's such a treat being able to witness everything they can do on-screen, following their careers and having reached this point, they are pulling off these smaller, subtle, yet important roles with such perfection. I highly recommend checking this one out!
