Review of Boy Culture (2006) by Ashley A — 15 May 2011
A good update of the 1990's novel. I found the characters lovable and engaging, and the plot smooth. A little predictable at times, the lead character X makes several cynical observations of love and people but still learns a valuable lesson about himself by the end.
I thought his statements on the annoying cultural stereotypes were sarcastic but true--things we all think when looking at others in a crowd. The supporting character of Joey stole the scenes he was in even though his acting skills are very green.
A well-made film with interesting characters and an amusing plot, fans of Queer as Folk and Secret Diary of a Call Girl will enjoy it. (I wonder if they shared a screenwriter--the cynicism of X is very similar to Brian Kinney.
