Review of Boy A (2008) by Jonathan H — 29 Apr 2011
Boy A is the story of a young man, Jack, who committed a terrible crime as a young boy. Newly released from prison with a new identity, he must come to terms with his past and try to start a new life. This shit is pretty heavy, but it is rich in substance.
This film poses some very important and challenging questions. I'd seen Andrew Garfield in The Social Network and Never Let Me Go and thought he was incredible, but he really blew me away here. Same goes for Peter Mullan who'd I'd only ever seen in Session 9 (not really a performer's movie).
John Crowley's direction is solid, with only a few minor missteps. The final moments of the film left me very upset (the circumstances, not the film making) and that isn't something many movies can pull off.
You could argue that the movie is manipulative, but it takes real skill and conviction to pull it off the way this film does.
