Review of Boy A (2008) by Harry F — 10 Mar 2011
There is a difference between sad and depressing in films. A depressing film is one which wallows in self misery, and exploits its sad moments, while a sad film is one which may make you cry while still continuing as a form of entertainment. Let it be known: Boy A is definitely a sad film.
Chronicling the release back into society of Eric Wilson (Garfield), now called Jack Burridge, this is truly dramatic stuff. The young Garfield, who was an unknown before this, is astonishing as who the media christened 'Boy A' during the trial. He makes a character who is in some ways a terrible person a likeable and realistic man, confused and remorseful. It's a brilliantly subtle performance, played to utter perfection. Support comes from the always wonderful Peter Mullan as his co-worker, in another underplayed performance, and Katie Lyons, charming as Jack's girlfriend.
It's a brutal film, both in subject matter and portrayal. There are some scenes of such intensity, it's amazing the camera doesn't flinch. The flashback sequences especially are in some ways horrible; admirably done but almost squirm inducing to watch. Meanwhile, the later scenes are deliberately disorientating, and some of the most emotional scenes in the film.
It isn't quite perfect, however. The ending is a little rushed, needing just that little bit more time to draw out its feelings. The ambiguity of the end may also leave some people a bit annoyed, after we've invested our time into the character and story. The character of Eric/Jack also changes a bit too dramatically: It's almost hard to believe a man this nice could have committed the crimes, and the two characters don't share much in common. Aside from those few flaws, it's a fantastic piece of work.
Verdict: Filled with excellent performances and high emotions, this is excellent and a true breakout for Andrew Garfield.
