Review of Boy (2012) by Justin M — 28 Feb 2012
I remember when my friend Lucy who lives in Wellington told me to watch the short movie Two Cars, One Night by director Taika Waititi and I had enjoyed it. I began watching this movie without realizing it's his, but I ended up enjoying it just as much.
In the beginning, this movie is hilarious. I'm sure there are many puns/jokes throughout the film that only Maori New Zealanders will catch, but it's still quite side-splitting at points. Then it weirdly transcends into a drama and that's where it mostly lost me.
Boy is a great joy to watch and I'm happy to have expanded more on Waititi's repertoire as well as seen a movie from a part of the world I'm not very familiar with. It's wacky, insane, sad and tragicomic all together. There won't be a person who'll hate this movie because it's just impossible to.
