Review of Bowling for Columbine (2002) by William R — 01 Apr 2010
WOW. What a powerful documentary. Moore really did an outstanding job with this well deserved Oscar winning documentary on the dangers of guns in the United States. The film centers around the 1999 Columbine High School and focuses on the different stories of people around the country who have been victims of gun violence.
Moore has some deep interviews with the brother of one of the men who was charged in the OK City Bombings, shock rocker Marilyn Manson, South Park co-creator Matt Stone, and especially the ending, an interview with actor Charlton Heston that seems unreal, but actually happened and is mind-blowing.
The typical Moore moment of reward comes in the form of two of the Columbine victims (one disabled to a wheelchair, the other heavily scarred ) accomplishing the act of pushing K-Mart to ban the sell of the bullets that are lodged within their bodies.
The film is an effective tool in promoting the idea of banning the sell of military grade weapons and ammunition. Overall, Moore deserved the Oscar for this superb documentary.
