Review of Bowfinger (1999) by Cody S — 21 Mar 2010
This is probably one of the funniest movies Iâ??ve ever seen. And that movie is What About Bob Director Frank Ozâ??s BOWFINGER. Released in the summer of 1999, the film tells the story about a desperate, down on his luck producer-director name Bobby Bowfinger (Steve Martin) who finally finds the â??perfectâ?? script, a cheesy science fiction movie called â??Chubby Rainâ??.
He convinces a famous movie producer (briefly played by Robert Downey Jr.) to make it a go-ahead picture, but under one condition: Hollywoodâ??s hottest action star Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy), who in real life is a paranoid and egocentric jerk, to be the lead star.
Kit refuses. So Bobby puts together a motley group of misfits: an ambitious wannabe actress from Ohio (Heather Graham), a melodramatic diva (Christine Baranski), a camera operator (Jamie Kennedy) who secretly steals movie equipment from a nearby studio, a laid back male hopeful (Kohl Sudduth), an accountant (Adam Alexi-Malle) who wrote the filmâ??s script, a bunch of Mexican immigrants as the film crew, and Kitâ??s nerdy twin brother Jiff (also played by Eddie Murphy), to make Chubby Rain by secretly filming Kit around Los Angeles, without him even knowing about it.
Originally titled â??Bowfingerâ??s Big Thingâ??, Steve Martin wrote this film and talked Frank Oz, who worked together before in 1988â??s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, into directing this hilarious movie that had lots of improvisation, between the supporting actors and the filmâ??s lead stars.
I thought both Martin and Murphy were great in their comedic performances. Graham, Kennedy, Alexi-Malle, Sudduth, and Terrance Stamp were good. I thought Baranski was very annoying as the melodramatic diva.
And when I first saw this movie, I was shocked to see Downey because he was in his downfall at that time and I didnâ??t like him then. Thanks to Iron Man, that went away. Whether youâ??re a Steve Martin fan or an Eddie Murphy fan, Bowfinger is something Iâ??d recommend for you to see.
