Review of Bowfinger (1999) by Duncan L — 22 Sep 2009
Bowfinger is an exceptional comedy that is rare. It is also a movie that brought Steve Martin back into the industry that re-ignite his career as well. There are many things we can forgive about this film - it's vulgar, it's disgusting but it is also cleverly written that seriously where most comedy movies are nothing but slapstick and silliness, this one is original and brought the true meaning of what it means to be funny.
With an all star cast of Eddie Murphy, Heather Graham, Terence Stamp and many others bring this movie to light that you can follow so well from start to finish. It is the classic Steve Martin sort of film you will enjoy with a little more updated that is heading towards the 21st century. The good thing about Bowfinger is it's no nonsense comedy. It is straight to the point that pose many society problems and the funny things people do to make an impossible movie become possible and it works. How his madcap ideas and con tactics just to win people to finance his film seriously incredibly ingenius. You can never go wrong with that. And with Frank Oz helming as the director, this is a sure win comedy film that you can watch and watch again and laugh it out loud all over (seriously, this movie you won't get tired of).
Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy make the perfect screen-buddy. I believe if it is just Martin alone or Murphy, it is rather hard to make this movie work. But then, both carry the roles pretty well alone but together they explodes in fury of laughter; the giggles and chuckles kept coming from beginning to finish. While other actors do their best in their roles, their supporting brings both the main actors to life. For a moment there I thought they can just stand around much but then I never realize it works well - one entire group that make this movie funny till tears come out.
Bowfinger was comedy of 1999 year and they make the most of it. Seriously, Jim Carrey can't carry this movie well and it takes an experience actor like Steve Martin to make the best of it. Watch this as this is highly recommended.
