Review of Bound by Honor (1993) by Dave R — 20 Dec 2008

This movie aimed to be a sweeping epic but I think it would have been better if had been made as 2 separate movies - the director's cut I watched clocked in at 3 hours - one movie about 3 friends growing up in east LA and another movie about prison gangs. I can't say much about how authentic the portrayal of the latino/chicano community in LA is - as I grew up in boston which had virtually no such community - but the themes explored are familiar ones: honor, loyalty, friendship and family. the film does a decent job of exploring those themes but ultimately went nowhere - the ending felt empty.

Interesting to see some faces who would go on to do bigger and better things: billy bob thorton, ving rhames, delroy lindo...
