Review of Bottle Shock (2008) by Steven N — 07 Feb 2009
Despite the fact that "Bottle Shock" is the story of a subject for which I have absolutely no interest, I didn't completely hate the movie, and that's quite a feat. Randall Miller's film follows the true story of the early days of the California Napa Valley wine industry, as it looked to gain respect in a world dominated by the French.
Despite there being a few script flaws, the best thing the film has going for it is a very good, very engaging, very talented cast. It is the actors that make this worth watching. Alan Rickman, Chris Pine, Freddy Rodriguez, Rachael Taylor, and Bill Pullman all deliver.
Like I said before, the script does have some flubs. There are more than a few unnecessary moments, a couple confusing ones as well. At the same time though there is some heart here, and for ever confusing scene there are five that really work.
Even if you like me and you don't know anything about wine, don't care to know anything about wine, and possibly even find the whole wine culture a wee bit silly, you might be surprised at just how much you enjoy this film.
It's the simple moments that make "Bottle Shock" more than worth you time, and for this it gets a mild recommendation from me.
