Review of Bottle Shock (2008) by Johnny B — 10 Apr 2009
It really bugs me when the trailer to the film is more exciting than the film itself and sadly, this is the case with Bottle Shock. Critiqued on its cover as being the next Sideways or Little Miss Sunshine, I would have to say that's far from the truth.
California's Napa Valley provides a beautiful, visual backdrop for this true story but the pacing and editing of this movie leaves a lot to be desired. I chose it because I'm an Alan Rickman fan but he didn't convince me that he was sommelier Stephen Spurrier, I just thought, "Well, that's Alan Rickman.
" However, Rachael Taylor and Freddy Rodriguez gave fine performances while Bill Pullman left me cold (he's been much better and must have been suffering from lack of direction) and Chris Pine drove me absolutely crazy with that ridiculously horrible and distracting 70's wig he wore throughout.
His character was a total douche! Honestly, wardrobe people, couldn't you have found something that actually looked real?! We never find out how the red wine made by the only character worth caring about in the whole movie, Freddy Rodriguez' Gustavo Brambila, placed in the Judgment of Paris competition and that makes Bottle Shock a major disappointment!
