Review of Bottle Rocket (1996) by Ilkka I — 21 Aug 2010
Everything about this film smacks of Wes's future work and as far as debut's go, it is an assured and wonderfully executed film.
Having rewatched this recently, the characters are what endure beyond the simple story. Luke Wilson has bags of charm and is such a likeable presence, the relationship he strikes up with Inez at the motel has a childlike quality that is so sweet to watch. Then we have Owen Wilson who from the very first frame of the film infuses a fantastic quirky quality as Dignan. He is terrific as he attempts to acheive the aims of his 75 year plan. In addition to this, the supporting characters are equally good, especially Kumar, the best safecracker in the world, he is hysterically good.
Visually, the film looks beautiful and the use of music once again fits the film like a glove. Overall, this is a film that has grown on me over the years and I can see it sticking with me for more to come.
