Review of Bottle Rocket (1996) by Ted R — 09 Oct 2008
If you haven't seen this film yet, I definitely recommend it. Long before the Wilson brothers became household names and Wes Anderson directed more popular films like 'Rushmore' and 'The Royal Tenenbaums,' 'Bottle Rocket' appeared on the indie movie scene and received little or no attention.
In my opinion this was certainly unwarranted since this is an excellent movie, and probably Anderson's best effort to date. The story revolves around Luke Wilson's character, Anthony, as he attempts to re-acclimate himself to normal life after a nervous breakdown.
His efforts are somewhat hindered as he is reunited with his longtime friend Dignon (Owen Wilson) whom he is more friends with out of pity than genuine camaraderie. Dignon is obsessed with the criminal underworld, and eventually convinces Anthony to team up with their friend Bob to rob a bookstore, and subsequently "go on the lamb.
" This movie is hilarious, but the real crowning jewel is the supurb acting job done by both Wilson brothers. They are able to create a believable and familiar dynamic that makes the humorous situations they encounter all the more enjoyable.
Combine this with an outstanding over-the-top performance by James Caan as a odd-ball criminal boss who uses a landscaping company as his cover, and you get an entertaining, original and endearing film that is among one of my favorites of all time.
