Review of Bottle Rocket (1996) by Henri L — 19 Apr 2009
Hmmm. This Martin Scorsese favourite is the weakest of all of Wes Andersons movies but it is definitely still a an okay debut. The Anderson-trademarks are all here: Great use of popular music (a couple og songs by Love and "2000 Man" by The Rolling Stones) and two scenes that show his excellent use of slow motion.
Especially the last shot of Owen Wilson in slow-mo is hautingly beautiful - just unforgetable. The story also has the same twisted character portrays that the audience is used to in a movie by Anderson.
Owen Wilson is noteworthy as the crazy Dignan who in lack of contact with the real world goes on a crime spree in hope to find a way to live the life he wish he had. Despite the obvious strangeness of Andersons charcters they always have the sympathy of the audience.
It is easy to see why Scorsese loves this film - it deals with a lot of the same values and moral issues that was being portrayed in "Mean Streets". "Bottle Rocket" is not the American classic as that one is, but it is definitely still worth to check out.
