Review of Born to Be Blue (2015) by Carl D — 03 Sep 2016
Utter rubbish I walked out.
You would think they would have done some reserch about musicians in general and jazz music in particular or at least had professional consultants on set to avoid the worst clangers.
Trumpet music carrying on after Hawke has taken the horn off his lips! Incorrect fingering, at least cut away to someone playing the trumpet for real otherwise it looks ridiculous. It's a film about a trumpet player you need to get the technicalities right if nothing else, at least in Miles Davis' biopic they had someone who could play a bit to give it some credibility. After Chet has been assaulted he blows the trumpet instead of delicately buzzing on the mouthpiece (to ascertain the extent of his injury), then makes the injury worse, instead of laying off it as any trumpet player would do...disrespecting his trumpet by throwing it around on a beach like it was a piece of junk ...continuity howlers like a busted tooth in one scene miraculously mended in the next...come on people do your homework! Miles Davis portrayed backstage as a petulant childish mean nasty person which no jazz musician of his or their calibre would ever be, instead of being friendly and respectful as jazz musicians will always be to other jazz musicians.. Totally unrealistic depiction of jazz greats. If you know anything about music or the music business save yourself a wasted hour and a half, you will thank me for this advice.
