Review of Born on the Fourth of July (1989) by Nathan H — 13 Jan 2008
I've said it before and I'll say it again: nobody can capture the journey of the Baby Boom Generation like Oliver Stone. Just as in "JFK," here Stone allows us to feel the excitement and optimism of the early '60s, the ease with which the nation's youth could be swept up into a dangerous and wrong-headed war.
Essentially, this movie takes the viewer on the emotional and idealogical roller-coaster ride of the Baby Boomers: patriotism, violence, denial, bitter anger at the government, and then finally a sort of realization that the entire world has also changed in just ten years time.
Brilliant filmmaking.
