Review of Born on the Fourth of July (1989) by Daniel S — 30 Jun 2013
Companion piece to stone's platoon, this time showing mainly the aftermath of the vietname war on soldiers once they got home and both the physical and emotional traumas they went through, cruise is good in his first dramatic role, I think he is a great actor and hes great here, going from idealistic young man to battle weary veteran, it does get a bit over the top and in your face with some of the messages and themes at times, stone has never been a subtle director, but I have to give high praise to john williams' score, I fucking love it, it is definitely one of the top 3 scores of all time, I could listen to it to days on end, and the combo of the music and some images/cinematography are very effective, the vietnam war is one of the darkest events in this world's history and its consequences will continue to linger forever.
