Review of Born on the Fourth of July (1989) by Jim F — 27 Sep 2011
My favorite of all Vietnam war movies. This is more than just that though. It's a life story, of which all the ups, downs and life moments are impeccibly portrayed. The childhood memories, the dreams that are so quickly and suddenly destroyed but one random moment in the life of Ron Kovic.
As the viewer you share the feelings of despair, suffering, frustration and loss associated with this character so clinicaly. All the gritty details associated with being a cripple, and the feeling that emerges as being unappreciated as a soldier is fantastic viewing.
The disiilusionment is so clearly placed at the time of disillusion. The complications, the horror of realization as the crying baby suddenly dawns the notion that his life is changed for the worse forever.
Every emotion is shared by the viewer, and every wrong move, act of frustration and profanity is understood and in some way excused. This movie cuts to the bone on so may occasions. So utterly real.
