Review of Born into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids (2004) by Arctic . — 06 Nov 2007
Just caught this randomly on IFC last night. Very touching documentary about the children of prostitutes in Calcutta's red light district and how the quality of their lives is reflected by the cameras they learn to use.
The documentary itself had some issues - time seemed to jump all over the place, from one day at a time to weeks and months. For example, the wait to see if they could secure a passport for Avijit. But the technical issues didn't much matter.
This film really attaches you to these children and makes you pull for them to succeed. That only makes it harder when reality sets in at the end, and you see the updates for each child.
