Review of Born into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids (2004) by Sean G — 22 Jan 2008
Engaging, but...
I was really excite to see this film, and had heard great things all over the place, but this film fails on a couple of fronts.
Firstly, this is never a film about the children of prostitutes. It's a film about Zana Briski's experiment giving still cameras to children in impoverished situations and her attempts to navigate the system and get these children into boarding schools.
The documentary spends most of it's time on Briski's efforts and not a lot of time on the children or asking any questions of substance. So much so that you start to question her motives in making this film.
This film will draw you in, and have you wanting to learn more about the children, but will never really let you feel that you know them. It's really disappointing this documentary didn't go further.
