Review of Born into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids (2004) by Ting A — 21 Jul 2008
Zana Briski and Ross Kaufmann record their time Calcutta in a documentary that will change the life of children of prostitutes who work in the cityâ??s infamous red light district.
Zana teaches and inspires eight kids to learn photography. As the kids excel in their new found art, the filmmakers make a great effort to assist them and have a chance for a better life away from the depressing circumstances that will jeopardize their dreams.
This is one of the best documentaries that I have ever seen. It just penetrates directly to the heart. It is poignant and compelling. In a world where it seems that thereâ??s no hope, this documentary proves that there is still light at the end of the tunnel, even with so many challenges.
