Review of Born into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids (2004) by Arjun D — 25 Nov 2008
It disturbed me a tad that some scenes seemed to be haphazardly inserted into the narrative. what's with the cussing and swearing of the women? who exactly were scolded? for what reason? and was the tension ever dissipated? but you feel connected to these children very quickly.
a line uttered by one of the girls-"one just has to think of life as sad and painful" was heartwrenching, especially when she ironically smiled at the camera when saying these sentiments. another boy expressed in a dead serious tone about his desire to bring puja, his best female friend-perhaps his crush-out of the red light district but knows his limitations.
aviji, whose mother was murdered by her pimp, who felt disconnected to everything around him. it sucks that they are so young and yet feel so isolated and lonely. yet, despite all that they are going through, they have managed to retain their exuberance and innocence.
suffice it to say that the movie was so arresting that I immediately checked for job vacancies at world vision and mercy relief after viewing it.
