Review of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) by Adam S — 23 Feb 2012
Borat, like every other film Sacha Baron Cohen has come out with, is completely and utterly overrated.
I understand where Cohen is coming from, with the ironic mocking of the prejudiced. I understand and respect that, really, I do. It's just the jokes themselves that, for want of a better discription, bore me. Not all of them, sometimes it becomes entertaining. Some scenes try too hard to be funny though, particularly the one featuring Borat and his producer engaging in some naked wrestling. Just, didn't need to see it.
Admittedly, the film is miles better now that you can actually go out of the house without hearing some wannabe comedian finishing every sentence with "NOT" or talking in a poor imitation of Borat's accent.
But overall, this is a cultural phenomenon we didn't need to have.
