Review of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) by Brett C — 17 Dec 2014
Review In A Nutshell:
Comedies are a tricky genre to accomplish, as everyone's humour is distinct and therefore cannot appreciate every type there is. Borat was hit and miss film for me, with some elements that left me in complete laughter while others in complete silence, sometimes even with a cringe. The film pushes certain boundaries and executes them with crudeness and ignorance; the film primarily touches on American culture and Borat is a person that exposes the country's prejudices and ignorance, and at times it does make one reflect. The character Borat is built to be so unlikeable that there were many scenes that could have been hilarious but because his character is so relentless in his values that it actually ended up offending me. The scenes that did leave me in laughter and tears are the ones that were sudden and disruptive; it didn't have to be culturally offensive. I guess I could never shake off my love for physical humour.
