Review of Booty Call (1997) by Alex M — 20 Aug 2005
(SHORT REVIEW).
This comedy is often used as an example of the kind of scatological, sexually-charged and stupid comedies that dominated the moviehouses of the late 90s. Yet Booty Call is nowhere near as bad as its reputation might suggest. Yes, it's ridiculously stupid, and isn't consisently funny enough to excuse its stupidity. But I got on the film's wavelength and wasn't as disgusted as I thought I would be. Booty Call makes no secret about what it is: a sex comedy about two really horny men who have only one goal for the night (and if you can't guess the goal, this film will be far too sophisticated for you). What I appreciated about the movie is that it doesn't cut corners or try to be sentimental as well as ribald...it's pretty wholeheartedly committed to being a juvenile comedy about various embarrassing sexual situations. The movie also deserves some credit for giving more screen time to the female characters and their point-of-view than this type of comedy generally does. Make no mistake, this is no work of art, and it's a pretty bad film, but for what it is, Booty Call at least makes a decent attempt and doesn't leave as bad a taste as many other comedies of its ilk.
