Review of Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000) by Kurt M — 13 Dec 2012
Director Joe Berlinger had intent and a social commentary to tell, but the production issues and studio demands mangled that into what we have now. There is no Book of Shadows but BLAIR WITCH 2 is all about lying to you anyways.
Instead of continuing the found-footage of the first, BW2 is a traditionally made psychological thriller that emphasizes and persecutes our own reliance on video and pop culture. It's often clever, always unsettling, but sometimes incoherent.
Artisan wanted something else and cut the movie to shit. Still, I don't think its all their fault. There are times where Berlinger just doesn't know what he's shooting and why. Still, Artisan had final cut and wanted this movie out in nine months.
You get what you pay for.
