Review of Book Club (2018) by Barbee S — 13 Jun 2018
So why would a dude in his 40s want to see a movie about four women in their 70s? Well, three of 'em have Oscars, the other a shelf full of Emmys. And, well, I have a MoviePass and a multiplex a block away from my house.
While the Book Club's reading of the Fifty Shades books as a premise seems somewhat dated, the film is chock-full of laughs. It's funny, well acted, and actually has a story. However it's an upper middle class vision without any diversity.
On the plus side, they've provided some good eye-candy for the ladies seeing this flick: Don Johnson and Andy Garcia. They've also dusted off Ed Begley, Jr., Craig T. Nelson, and Richard Dreyfuss.
I'm having a 1970s/1980s flashback. Anyhow, Book Club does what a comedy is supposed to do ... make you laugh!
