Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Angel M — 30 Jul 2012
One of the pinnacles of filmmaking in the 90's from Paul Thomas Anderson, a modern master, the ultimate combo of Scorsese's energy and Kubrick's vision. Lurid subject matter aside, this is ultimately a very moving and exhilarating story about lost, damaged people trying to find their place in the world, and clinging to each other like the family they needed but never had.
It also works as a portrait of two decades, the free-spirited 70's, and the more conservative 80's which ended the decades-long party. A flawless cast, a perfect soundtrack, and some of the most awe-inspiring scenes in film history make this a highly underrated masterpiece.
Everything good about cinema is on full display here, particularly in a nerve-wracking drug deal scene that goes horribly wrong.
