Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Carlos R — 15 Sep 2010
An outstanding masterpiece and one of 90's best. I've just seen it for the first time and it's truly an admirable piece of work, exciting and interesting from the very beginning. Excellent direction, excellent acting and excellent writing, also an amazing soundtrack.
All the main characters are greatly developed, and the chemistry between all the actors was really remarkable. Mark Wahlberg surprised me with this awesome performance, a really hard role to play and he passed the test, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, John C.
Reilly and Philip Seymour Hoffman (with very few scenes) gave all incredible performances. The 70's atmosphere was well done, very different in style even to other films from that time, a lot of realistic drug and sex scenes.
Not even one important detail was forgotten. It was a really risky film to made, whose plot with a few changes and in the hands of any other director, maybe it would've been a complete mess, but Paul Thomas Anderson is really an excellent director.
From now on, this movie will really be unforgettable, totally mindblowing.
