Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Joe W — 27 Jun 2011
Boogie Nights is a truly overlooked movie. The ensemble cast meshed so well with Anderson's direction, making the movie that much more believable. It was certainly a long movie, but it is 152 minutes well spent.
Wahlberg is a strong lead character, but the story isn't solely about one person. Cheadle, Moore, Reynolds, Reilly, and Macy are spectacular and the feel of the movie is extremely genuine. During the 70s, the tone is happier and fueled by the success of the porn industry.
For the scenes in the 80s, this happiness is turned into resentment and denial that leads into Walhberg's demise along with others. Some of the scenes are excessively dark, but they are useful in showing the audience how far these once bright stars have fallen.
A violent, sexual cornucopia of a movie, Boogie Nights fulfills every sense necessary and should have been more noticed during the 1998 Oscars.
