Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Samson D — 03 Dec 2011
A modern classic. I do not know what to say about this film, but I think one way I once heard it described was the opposite of Pulp FIction: instead of being a violent flick sprinkled with humor, Boogie Nights is a pure comedy sprinkled with scenes of brutal but masterfully crafted violence.
Just like Pulp Fiction, it's an over-the-top, sublime second film from one of the biggest voices in American cinema right now, and one of the best films of the 90's. Also like Pulp Fiction, it manages to hit a sweet spot between an exquisitely made piece of art, and a straight-up entertaining crowd-pleasing popcorn flick, which is no easy feat.
The cinematography, the screenplay, PT's flashy as fuck direction, it's a fucking roller coaster of laughs and gasps. PT Anderson's best film.
