Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Greg L — 03 Jan 2012
Ignore that it's set in the porn industry rather than Hollywood or the music business, and it's a very conventional rise-and-fall show biz story, but the the script expertly leavens its formulaic "A Porn Star Is Born" melodrama with sly observations about the place of sex and family in American society and marvelous moments of dark, offbeat humor.
The performances are also excellent. Burt Reynolds, as a sort of non-comic version of Jackie Treehorn, is particularly good, but everyone pulls their weight. For my money it's still P.T. Anderson's best movie.
