Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Stephen E — 10 Jan 2013
"Boogie Nights" is another fine epic drama from Paul Thomas Anderson, even if it doesn't hold as much depth as his superior effort, "Magnolia." The film really gets going about an hour in, where its characters take a turn for the worse as they enter the 1980s.
Anderson has this half-satiric, half-sympathetic way of telling his story, which chronicles the lives of several porn stars during their rise and fall, and it gives his film this quirky and humorous, sad yet hopeful quality that's kind of unforgettable.
Before "Boogie Nights" takes its pivotal turn, it isn't that much of a spectacle, but when it gets going, you'll be surprised how deep it can get.
