Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Brian S — 04 Feb 2014
A classic in every sense of the word, Paul Thomas Anderson's audacious sophomore effort is all kinds of cool, takes you on a high ride, smacks you as it dives back to Earth and has enough in the tank for another go.
Peppered with healthy doses of Scorsese and Altman, Boogie Nights is the kind of film that flatters the imitated, all the while dancing to its own (rock n' roll) groove. The attention to detail and commitment from the cast and crew is seen in every (explicit) frame, often bordering on the darkly funny to smack-dab violent.
The balancing act between character, circumstance, fate and honest to goodness talent is seen in full display with Boogie Nights both in front and in back of the camera.
