Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Justin S — 04 Sep 2014
A film that is highly acclaimed and high praised as Paul Thomas Anderson's Masterpiece rings false with me. This is a film that seems to have taken too much influence from other films. It often feels too much like a downgraded version of Goodfellas with pornstars.
The ending steals from another Scorsese film, Raging bull. So for a director who is bursting with originality with great films like (There will be blood, Punch-drunk love and the master) ends up making a movie during a time in his career where his first 3 efforts were decent, but not without it's major faults.
The few positives of this film was it's objectiveness on the porn industry, the tragic lives of each character and it's excellent performances. However, by the end of the movie I felt exhausted.
A great commentary on the porn industry, but not a great movie. But it is still a pretty damn good movie.
