Review of Boogie Nights (1997) by Gabe C — 27 Oct 2011
This is a fantastic film. It's only flaw is that it may be a bit too realistic. Mark Wahlberg gives the best performance I've seen yet in his career. The camera movements are ambitious and exceptional, just like the film's successor Magnolia.
The tonal shifts within the film are clear, and the conclusion is satisfying. P.T. Anderson's films combine cinematography with a profound, 3-dimensional respect for his characters that draws the viewer and forces him/her not to judge, but to understand.
That, in my humble opinion, is good filmmaking.
