Review of Boogeyman 2 (2007) by Dani B — 14 Apr 2008
Is this REALLY a four-star movie? I don't know. I just know that I think it deserves that level of praise because it has so many things going against it: for one, it's a sequel. Two, not only is it a sequel, it's a sequel to one of the worst horror movies of all time. Finally, it's a direct to video sequel of one of the worst horror movies of all time.
Despite these things, though, Boogeyman 2 is what happens when an ensemble of filmmakers and writers come together and actually understand horror and understand what makes it work and what makes it not work. The acting and dialogue is nothing to write home about but at the same time, it ain't bad either. The death scenes are absolutely disgusting. And lo and behold, it accomplishes a few scenes of pure creepiness and edge of your seat momentum. But first and foremost, it puts a story that works, and characters that work, together like peanut butter and jelly. This is a very, very exceptional horror film and one of the biggest and best surprises of my film-watching history.
