Review of Boo (2005) by Jack D — 17 Jul 2007
Bad acting, hackneyed premise, unoriginal setting - I thought this film was great.
Made by a horror fan as a first time feature, Anthony C. Ferrante manages to steer a capable course through the booby-trapped genre that is "teenagers being slaughtered in an abandoned hospital". He cues up frights thick and fast and tips the odd post-ironic wink when it veers towards classic "silly decision horror" ("hey I wonder whats in that organ-splattered lift?").
Sensibly it jumps into the action quite quickly without padding out the paper-thin characters, although you have to admire a cop who was once a Blaxploitation actor called Dynamite Jones complete with lycra suit and bad dubbing.
Don't look too deep, turn down the lights and hoist up the sound and you'll find this fun. If you want to keep your brain stimulated though head for a Tartan Extreme title instead.
