Review of Bone Tomahawk (2015) by Lewis E — 09 Jan 2016
Other than offering a chance to see Kurt Russell's rugged moustache early in action before 'The Hateful Eight', 'Bone Tomahawk' gives an unexpected treat of being a genre blend of western and horror.
Certainly daring and out of the ordinary, luckily this creative choice proved to be a compatible pairing. However, like most westerns, it is an extremely slow burner, meaning a lot of downtime with the cowboys while they trot on horseback and talk around the camp fire.
In relation to its horror, grisly violence and insight into the ruthless western civilisation provides that dark edge even full-on horrors lack. Those with weak stomachs be warned because a couple moments almost had me throwing up my chicken dinner.
The snail pace and raw brutality will prevent everyone from liking 'Bone Tomahawk' but it wouldn't surprise me if its originality gained it a cult following.
