Review of Bon Cop Bad Cop (2006) by Michelle S — 07 Apr 2008
First of all, it is recommended that you know at least a little bit of French before watching this movie. The subtitles are done quite well, but still, there are certain expressions in Quebecois French that subtitles simply cannot capture.
Also, far from bringing down the flow of the humour, the language-switching throughout the film works to enhance the humour. The cultural references to Ontarians and Quebecois, as well as to certain Canadian traditions, are always appropriate, even if not always original.
More importantly, though, is that director Eric Canuel brings together a crime, comedy, action and mystery movie that is never in danger of falling apart at the seams, as each element complements the other.
I am sure by now many of you have seen lots of "buddy cop" movies like Rush Hour and all of the others, and have been thinking that most of those films are very cheesy, unoriginal and suck rhinocerous testicles - but rest assured, Bon Cop Bad Cop is not a typical buddy cop movie.
By the way, if you want to see another humorous buddy cop movie on top of BCBC, watch Hot Fuzz.
