Review of Bolt (2008) by Kyle O — 13 Jun 2011
Two films must've been made here. A good portion of the film feels like it's stuck in the Michael Eisner era of the Disney studios. The other half feels like the current Disney animated films, where the animation studio is now free of executive interference.
"Bolt" has some great moments, and its story is certainly well-told despite being familiar. The characters are likable, too. Not dull in any way, "Bolt" gets a lot right. Unfortunately, inconsistent dialogue spoils it.
We get some good writing, and then some writing that feels like it was geared towards the tweener crowd. It's not as obvious as a DreamWorks film, but it is a reminder of why Disney was going downhill prior to this film and "Meet the Robinsons".
Still, "Bolt" is the bridge between the problematic Eisner-era Disney and the new Disney, that is trying to make improvements. (See "The Princess and the Frog") A solid Disney film.
