Review of Bolt (2008) by David B — 14 Jan 2014
Well I'm still yet to see an animated film that can topple the mighty 'Toy Story', 'TS' still sits on its throne with the number one spot. But Bolt is a nice film, very sweet, very nice, a touch of emotion and you have a good solid performance.
The jokes aren't a match for Pixar's best, and there's too much sentimentality (as if Lasseter were determined to keep Disney's cartoons just that little bit less cool than Pixar's), but this is still an above-average children's film.
John Travolta should do more in voice acting as he's wonderful in this, his best performance since Pulp Fiction. The rest of the cast are good. Like an animated animal version of The Truman Show, it does work well.
Pixar are still kings of CGI animation but Walt Disney (With Pixar's name) are getting close. The unlikely superhero of this film is the hamster, who brings the funny amid a flurry of weaker gags.
But Bolt still has charm - it just won't hit with the adults the way the best animated films can.
