Review of Bokeh (2017) by Tony R — 25 Jul 2017
Everyone in the world mysteriously disappears, except one American couple on vacation in Iceland, okay? Just accept that and don't ask any pesky questions. 'Cuz you ain't getting any answers, anyway.
I may be a philistine but I, for one, am growing weary of these art-house movies that seem to believe that saying and doing next to nothing makes you seem deep and insightful. I'm all for nuance, but even nuance needs some substance around which to play out. Doubly so for the landscape-as-a-character trope. Pointing a camera at a beautiful landscape ain't cinematography, people!
So, you really need ninja-level suspension of disbelief skills for this one. If you can do that, you're in for...a pretty ho-hum movie experience. All this pseudo sci-fi foreplay boils down to: "how do people deal differently with situations." She simply cannot deal, it turns out. He can, sort of. Not that I really cared, ever. I think they gave it about a week. The clash between her existential angst and his plucky can-do attitude could have been fleshed out a bit and perhaps salvaged this movie, but everything has to be left at the hint of an innuendo of a suggestion because ART.
Watch it if you like Iceland, I guess. There are some pretty pictures.
