Review of Boiler Room (2000) by Se7Enth A — 17 Mar 2010
"They say money can't buy happiness? Look at the f*king smile on my face. Ear to ear, baby.".
"Anyone who tells you that money is the root of all evil, doesn't f*king have any" Ben Affleck's character spews.
Ignoring the fact that this is supposedly a guys' movie, I decided to watch it anyway. Now who doesn't want to be fabulously rich in an incredibly short amount of time. The Boiler Room -where 20somethings millionaires were made overnight. Giovanni Ribisi plays a slick but little boy lost charmer with a conscience. He is eager to prove his worth to his demanding, judemental father by joining a maverick brokerage house where money flows freely. Here ambitious Gen-Xers chases the green at breakneck speed. I think Ribisi's role is one of my favorites. My gripe: Nia Long, what is she doing here? Romantic interludes between Seth and Abby(Long), are among the film's weakest episodes. Despite it's immoral plot, I found the movie fascinating and realistically edgy. Lesson learned: I suppose every financial gain means a financial loss somewhere else, and often at a hefty price.
Caution: Extreme profanity.
