Review of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) by Eric R — 03 Dec 2018

Bohemian Rhapsody is a film directed by Bryan singer who due to his great filmmakingpast failed to bring one of the greatest bands to live. His misuse of the easy parts that would have made this film phenomenal make this almost unwatchable.

Biopics have become popular over the last 15 years. From Jamie Foxx's performance as Ray Charles in the movie ray to Joaquin Phoenix's performance as Johnny cash in walk the line. Straight outta Compton brought biopics back to life with its thrilling tale of the greatest rap group.

Biopics now have a bad reputation for being rushed and weak. To capture the story of the queen was doable but difficult. Bryan singer was sadly not the man up for the challenge. The scenes were too tamed for the real story.

The real story of queen would have been an R rated movie which would be chilling as the influence of drugs, alcohol and the life of a homosexual got to Freddie. The movie was very rushed having seen queen as a band no one new to one year later being on the TV.

That is one of the many rushed moments in this film which make you wonder what was in the middle of that. Where is the fired up conflict? The connect the dots plot made the movie incomplete. There is one scene where Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek) is given a look by a truck driver.

That is all we get as he walks into a bathroom. The viewer is supposed to believe what they want. What would have made the film better was it they continued with that shot and cut to a scene of them together.

It's almost as if we see him as straight and then one second later he's gay. This is poor script writing, direction and producing from everyone in the production of this film. The worst part of this film is that it is the worst representation of the other members of the queen.

I want to know what Brian may and the rest of the band's lives were like at the time of Freddie's success. The way that he took the spotlight when they had none would have made a better storyline then the watered down "drug" habits scene.

The director made Freddie when he was in Germany act like a child under the strict rules of his manager. Although that he was being forced to do things, he wasn't acting like he was a 5-year-old who didn't get his favourite thing for the first time.

Freddie in this movie was portrayed like a kid. He was weird, crazy and very flamboyant but he wasn't so autistic everything had to be told to him. May and Taylor's co-producer on this project so they could make Freddie look as and sound as real as possible but the fact is that Freddie was not M rated.

The scene where he walks through the gay bar would have been more hard-hitting if it wasn't M rated and the countless gay scenes in the film. There is nothing wrong with the homosexual scenes where Freddie is in as they are true but the time they spent on all of his boyfriends could have been switched with the life of deacon, may and Taylor's lives.

They are not as interesting but nevertheless part of the world's greatest band. In this film, plots were underdeveloped. Where did the plot of a deacon being the least popular go?? That would have been a great storyline that wasn't again pursued.

Half the film was made up for dramatic effect. This is what Freddie wouldn't want. Freddie would never have liked his life told as a lie and the people behind this film have shamed his legacy. Overall this film was over hyped by my friends but truthfully told by the critics.

I give bohemian Rhapsody 2/5 at the best.
